Silva, Varela, Caceres, Coates, Pereira Midfielders C. Sanchez, Bentancur, Vecino, Torreira, Nandez, Rodriguez, De Arrascaeta, Laxalt Forwards Suarez, Stuani, Gomez, Urretaviscaya, Cavani

Uruguay have concerns lingering over Edinson Cavani, who was their hero against Argentina, after the Paris Saint-Germain striker sustained a hamstring strain. The 31-year-old is in a race against time to prove his fitness for the game and could be replaced in the starting XI by Cristhian Stuani.

Luis Suarez also picked up a knock in the game against Argentina, but the Barcelona man is expected to be available.

Potential Uruguay XI: Muslera; Laxalt, Godin, Gimenez, Caceres; Bentancur, Torreira, Vecino, Nandez; Stuani, Suarez.

Didier Deschamps may opt to start with Olivier Giroud in attack in order to occupy Uruguay’s centre-backs, meaning Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe would line up either side of him in a 4-3-3.

Blaise Matuidi is suspended for the game, meaning Corentin Tolisso is likely to come into the midfield.

Potential France XI: Lloris; Pavard, Varane, Umtiti, Hernandez; Kante, Tolisso, Pogba; Griezmann, Mbappe, Giroud.

Match Preview

The battle at Nizhny Novgorod sees two former world champions go head to head, but the stature of the two teams stands in stark contrast, with France considered heavy favourites to progress.

Les Bleus topped Group C with relative ease, but Deschamps and his charges drew plenty of criticism in the process for the unconvincing nature of their performances. However, those critiques dissipated somewhat after their sensational Mbappe-inspired victory over Argentina in the last 16, which saw the Europeans take their level up a gear.

Daniel Sturridge in a blue shirtIn Uruguay, France come up against another South American opponent, but one that takes a markedly different approach to the game than the Argentines.

With the likes of Godin and Jose Gimenez at the back, Oscar Tabarez’s team is built on a solid defensive foundation – one that allows them to work off the counter-attack by quickly getting the ball forward to the likes of Suarez.

If they are to overcome the defiant Celeste, France will need to pick up where they left off in their last outing, otherwise, they could be in for a long, attritional game.
